AI Meter by GuruHat · Claude Code & Codex

Know your AI limit before you hit it.

AI Meter puts your remaining Claude Code or Codex usage in the Mac menu bar or on the Windows taskbar, with the time it resets. You can plan the big refactor instead of getting cut off halfway through it.

One glance, no dashboards

Your allowance, always in view.

Usage pages are a few clicks away and easy to forget. AI Meter keeps the one number that matters next to your clock.

%

Remaining, not used

The Mac menu bar and the Windows taskbar read AI 41%: how much of the current window is left, so you know at a glance whether to start the long task.

⇄

Claude or Codex

Switch providers in the menu. For Claude, it shows the five-hour window Claude Code enforces. For Codex, it shows your current ChatGPT allowance.

↺

See when it resets

The menu shows the exact reset time, so a low number tells you how long to wait, not only that you should.

5′

Refreshes on its own

AI Meter checks every five minutes, or right away when you click refresh. If a check fails, it keeps your last good reading.

⌁

Uses the sign-in you have

No API key and no new login. AI Meter reads the session Claude Code or the Codex CLI already saved on your computer.

◎

Nothing in between

Your token goes only to its own provider, Anthropic or OpenAI. There is no GuruHat server, account, or analytics, and every line is on GitHub.

Set up in a minute

Install. Pick. Glance.

If you already use Claude Code or the Codex CLI on this computer, there's nothing else to set up. Not showing your Claude usage? Troubleshooting ›

1
Install AI Meter

On a Mac, open the DMG and drag the app into Applications. If macOS warns about an unidentified developer, choose Open Anyway in System Settings › Privacy & Security. On Windows, run the setup file. If SmartScreen appears, choose More info › Run anyway.

2
Choose Claude or Codex

Click AI — in the Mac menu bar or on the Windows taskbar, and pick a provider. For Claude on a Mac, macOS asks once to let AI Meter read the Claude Code-credentials Keychain item. Choose Always Allow.

3
Keep working

The number updates as you go. When it gets low, check the reset time and decide whether to push on or take a break.

Questions

Good to know.

How do I check how much of my Claude Code limit is left?

Choose Claude in AI Meter's menu. The Mac menu bar or Windows tray icon shows the percentage of your current five-hour window that remains, and the menu shows when it resets.

Does it work with OpenAI Codex?

Yes. Choose Codex and AI Meter reads your remaining allowance using the ChatGPT sign-in the Codex CLI saves in .codex\auth.json in your home folder.

Is my login sent anywhere?

Only to the provider it belongs to, to ask for your usage. You can read exactly how in the source for Mac and Windows.

Why does it show “AI —” or “–”?

It couldn't find a sign-in for the selected provider, or the provider changed its usage endpoint. Sign in to Claude Code or the Codex CLI in Terminal (troubleshooting guide), then click refresh. The Claude desktop app's sign-in doesn't count.

How is it different from other usage trackers?

AI Meter by GuruHat shows how much of your Claude Code or Codex limit is left and when it resets, always on screen. Many other tools count tokens or estimate cost instead, and few run on Windows. See how they compare.

Ready when you are

Put on your pacing hat.

Download AI Meter for your Mac or PC and open it once. Your remaining usage will be in the menu bar or tray from then on.

macOS requires 13 or later on Apple silicon and uses a DMG installer. Windows requires 10 or 11 (x64) and uses a 3 MB EXE installer. AI Meter by GuruHat is an independent project and is not affiliated with Anthropic or OpenAI.
