How to check your Claude Code usage limit (and when it resets)

Written by GuruHat, which makes AI Meter. Checked in October 2026; Anthropic changes its plans and limits from time to time, so the current numbers are on its own help pages.

Short answer: inside Claude Code, run /usage to see how much of your current session and weekly limit you've used. On the web, open claude.ai › Settings › Usage. If you'd rather not keep checking, AI Meter by GuruHat keeps the percentage left and the reset time in your Mac menu bar or on the Windows taskbar.

How Claude Code limits work

On a Claude Pro or Max subscription, Claude Code shares one allowance with Claude on the web, desktop and mobile. Usage is counted in a rolling five-hour session window that starts with your first message, and there is also a weekly limit on top. When you run out of the five-hour window, you wait for it to reset; the size of the window depends on your plan and on how heavy your requests are, so there's no fixed message count.

If you use Claude Code with an API key instead of a subscription, you pay per token and these windows don't apply. Check your spend in the Anthropic Console.

Option 1: the /usage command in Claude Code

Type /usage in a Claude Code session. It shows how much of the current session and the weekly limit you've used and when each resets. It's accurate and built in, but you only see it when you remember to ask, usually right before you'd start a long task.

Option 2: claude.ai › Settings › Usage

Signed in at claude.ai, open Settings and choose Usage. You'll see the same plan limits as progress bars with reset times. It's handy on a phone, and it's one more tab to keep open on a computer.

Option 3: keep it on screen with AI Meter

AI Meter by GuruHat is a free, MIT-licensed app that shows AI 41% (the share of your five-hour window that's left) in the Mac menu bar or next to the Windows system tray. Click it for the exact reset time. It refreshes every five minutes and uses the Claude Code sign-in already on your computer, so there's no API key or new account. Your token is only sent to Anthropic to ask for your usage.

AI Meter tracks the five-hour window. For the weekly limit, use /usage or the claude.ai page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I see my remaining Claude Code usage?

Run /usage inside Claude Code, or open Settings › Usage on claude.ai. Both show how much of your current five-hour session and weekly limit is used and when each resets. AI Meter by GuruHat shows the remaining five-hour percentage in the Mac menu bar or Windows taskbar all the time.

When does the Claude Code limit reset?

The session limit runs in a rolling five-hour window that starts with your first message, so the reset time depends on when you started. /usage, claude.ai's Usage page and AI Meter all show the exact reset time.

Do claude.ai and Claude Code share the same limit?

Yes, on Pro and Max plans, usage in Claude on the web, desktop and mobile counts toward the same allowance as Claude Code.

Why does AI Meter show no Claude usage?

AI Meter needs a Claude Code sign-in made in Terminal or PowerShell with a Claude subscription. The Claude desktop app's sign-in is separate. The AI Meter troubleshooting guide at guruhat.com/apps/ai-meter/troubleshooting/ walks through the fix.
