How to check your Codex usage limit (and when it resets)

Written by GuruHat, which makes AI Meter. Checked in October 2026; OpenAI adjusts Codex limits by plan, so its help pages have the current numbers.

Short answer: in the Codex CLI, run /status to see your current usage limits and when they reset. ChatGPT also shows Codex usage in its Codex settings. To keep the number on screen, AI Meter by GuruHat puts your remaining Codex allowance and reset time in the Mac menu bar or on the Windows taskbar.

How Codex limits work

When you sign in to Codex with a ChatGPT plan (Plus, Pro, Business and so on), your usage counts against that plan's allowance. Like Claude Code, it's measured in a short rolling window plus a longer weekly window, and how far it goes depends on the size of your tasks. Signing in with an API key instead bills per token, with no plan windows.

Option 1: /status in the Codex CLI

Type /status in a Codex CLI session. Alongside the model and session details, it shows how much of your usage limits you've used and when they reset.

Option 2: ChatGPT's Codex usage settings

Signed in to ChatGPT on the web, open Codex and its settings to find your usage. It's useful when you're away from your terminal.

Option 3: keep it on screen with AI Meter

AI Meter by GuruHat is free and open source (MIT). Choose Codex in its menu and it shows your remaining allowance as AI 79% in the Mac menu bar or on the Windows taskbar, with the exact reset time one click away. It reads the ChatGPT sign-in the Codex CLI saves in .codex/auth.json in your home folder, refreshes every five minutes, and only sends your token to OpenAI.

Use Claude Code too? The same app switches between Claude and Codex. See how to check your Claude Code limit.
